As of September 2024, the devastating floods in Northern Sudan have affected 491,100 people across 15 states, leaving families and communities shattered. Torrential rains, which began in June 2024, have caused widespread destruction, displacing an estimated 143,200 people from their homes. Entire villages have been submerged, 35,518 homes completely destroyed, and livelihoods swept away in the floodwaters. The northern regions, including Northern State, North Darfur, and the River Nile State, have been hit hardest. In Northern State alone, more than 68,190 people have been affected, with 4,755 homes destroyed and 8,280 homes damaged. The situation is equally dire in North Darfur, where 122,680 people have been affected, and in River Nile State, where 58,825 people are struggling to survive as rising floodwaters threaten their already fragile infrastructure. In these regions, families have lost their homes, possessions, and access to clean water, sanitation, and healthcare. The health crisis triggered by the floods has been devastating. A cholera outbreak has swept through the affected areas, exacerbated by the lack of clean water and sanitation. Nearly 2,900 cholera cases have been reported between July 22 and September 1, 2024, and tragically, 112 lives have already been lost to the disease, with a case fatality rate of 3.9%.
