Sudan Humanitarian Crisis

T

he situation in Sudan has escalated severely since the conflict began in April 2023. A year into the war, more than 8 million people have been displaced, with at least 2 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries. Nearly 16,000 people, including military personnel, have been killed. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has warned of an escalation, with a potential imminent attack on El-Fasher in North Darfur, and expressed deep concerns about the arming of civilians by the warring parties.

The humanitarian crisis is acute, with approximately 18 million people, including 14 million children, facing severe food insecurity. Over 70% of hospitals are no longer functional, contributing to a rise in infectious diseases. UNICEF reports that almost 4 million children under five are projected to suffer from acute malnutrition this year. Education has been profoundly affected as well, with more than 90% of the country’s school-age children unable to access formal education.

The situation is dire, and the international community’s response has been underwhelming, with the Humanitarian Response Plan of $2.7 billion only around six percent funded. The international donor conference for the Sudan emergency began in Paris on Monday, with a call for increased contributions to support the life-saving humanitarian work being done in the region

The future of Sudan is uncertain, and the fighting could continue for months or even years. To provide life-saving aid to the affected population, Sadagaat-USA is collaborating with other US-based organizations and local initiatives in Sudan to offer food, medication, medical supplies, and water through its emergency response program. Your generous support can make a difference in helping the people of Sudan in their time of need. Please donate today.
